Intraoperative Radioguidance With A Portable Gamma Camera: New Technique For Laparoscopic Sentinel Node Localisation In Urological Malignancies
UroToday.com - Our first results of sentinel node mapping with intraoperative radioguidance in urological tumors are described in our abstract. We selected this movie to show the whole imaging procedure. In a patient with prostate cancer, the radiopharmaceutical is injected in 4 depots into the prostate. After tracer administration, planar lymphoscintigraphy is performed after 15 minutes and in 2 hours is followed by a SPECT/CT. After fusion of corresponding SPECT and CT slices, the two-dimensional fusion images show the location of the sentinel nodes.

Ultrasound Outperforms Symptom Analysis In Detecting Ovarian Cancer
Doctors at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center-Markey Cancer Center compared symptom analysis to ultrasound in predicting ovarian cancer. They selected 272 women participating in annual trans-vaginal screening (TVS) from 31,748 women enrolled in a free screening project at the university, comparing symptom results to ultrasound and surgical pathology findings.

Drug Companies Increasingly Use Medical Science Liaisons
The Wall Street Journal reports that drug companies are increasingly using medical science liaisons: "Pharmaceutical companies are barred by the Food and Drug Administration from promoting unapproved drug uses, called off-label use, but they are using employees called "medical science liaisons," who are often physicians and pharmacists, as a legal way to discuss those uses. Medical science liaisons, who are considered medical rather than sales staff, have greater freedom than salespeople as they visit doctors offices to discuss the science behind a medicine, including unapproved uses." It notes: "The FDA requires traditional sales reps to refer information requests to their employers" medical or scientific staff, MSLs are usually on those staffs."

Administration To Pitch Health Reform In "Model" Community

President Obama and top advisers will travel to Green Bay Thursday - "one of the highest-value health communities in the nation" - to promote health reform in a town-hall meeting, the Washington Post reports. "In his drive to rein in skyrocketing health-care costs, Obama is increasingly focused on wasteful medical care," the Post reports. The administration"s budget director, Peter Orszag, told the Post, "If we could make the rest of the nation practice medicine the way that Green Bay does, we would have higher quality and significantly lower costs." Obama"s new focus is driven in part by researchers at the Dartmouth (Health) Atlas Project who study variations in cost and quality across communities around the country. "[T]he differences that are really important are due to the differences in utilization rates," one researcher told the Post. Communities that use more medicine tend to cost more, and some evidence indicates that excessive care can actually be harmful, experts said (Connolly, 6/11).
