Faculty Of Translational Medicine Boosts Support For Biomedical Researchers
A new Faculty of Translational Medicine has been launched to increase support for, and enhance collaboration among researchers as they search for new treatments and diagnostic tests for a range of diseases and conditions. The Faculty is based in the National Institute for Health Research Comprehensive Biomedical Research Center at Guy"s and St Thomas" hospitals and King"s College London.

El Paso, Texas Planned Parenthood May Shift HIV/AIDS Programs To Other Organizations To Refocus Its Services
The Planned Parenthood Center of El Paso has begun to refocus its services on family planning and women"s health, and likely will shift its HIV/AIDS support programs to other providers that specialize in such services, according to the local agency"s board president, the El Paso Times reports. According to the agency, 56 percent of the center"s budget was earmarked for HIV/AIDS programs, while 30 percent was for family planning and primary health care. Lynn Salas, board president of the El Paso Planned Parenthood, said, "The [Planned Parenthood Federation of America] felt our AIDS/HIV programs had grown so much we were not focusing enough on the core mission, and we began in mid-March to plan the changes we are still working out" (Valdez, El Paso Times, 6/3).

Massachusetts Cuts Health Coverage By $115 Million
"Overseers of Massachusetts" trailblazing health care program made their first cuts recently, trimming $115 million, or 12 percent, from Commonwealth Care, which subsidizes premiums for needy residents and is the centerpiece of the 2006 law," according to the Boston Globe. The Connector Authority board made the cuts in response to two recession side effects: "the state budget crisis and a surge in enrollment by the recently unemployed." Commonwealth Care"s enrollment has increased in the last three months from 165,000 member to 177,000 members, and is projected to grow to 212,000 next year.

Burgess Accepts President Obama's Offer To Meet And Discuss Health Reform Bill

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) sent a letter to President Obama yesterday accepting his invitation to "come over to the White House and go over line-by-line" the health care reform plan the President is pushing. Last week President Obama held a health care town hall meeting in North Carolina, and offered the invitation to Members of Congress. President Obama stated, "When we come back in September, I will be available to answer any questions that members of Congress have. If they want to come over to the White House and go over line-by-line what"s going on, I will be happy to do that." In his letter to President Obama, Burgess accepts the President"s invitation and states that, as a doctor, he has several concerns with the plan and also many ideas he believes he and the President can both agree on when it comes to health reform.
