Foresight Biotherapeutics Announces Positive Results From An Open Label Pilot Study In Patients With Viral Conjunctivitis
Foresight Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced completion of a multi-center open-label pilot study of FST100 in the treatment of viral conjunctivitis. FST-100 is a novel formulation of dexamethasone that includes povidone iodine. The trial studied patients with clinical signs and symptoms of acute conjunctivitis who tested positive for adenoviral antigen by the RPS Adeno Detector® (RPS). Patients were enrolled in a single arm utilizing FST-100 topical ophthalmic suspension given 4 times daily for 5 days. The RPS Adeno Detector® test was performed at baseline and at each visit along with conjunctival swabs for adenoviral titers by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and cell culture with confirmatory immunoflourescence (CC-IFA). The primary endpoint of the study was clinical resolution of conjunctival injection and conjunctival discharge. These signs were scored on a scale from zero to three. Secondary endpoints included reduction of viral titers measured by qPCR and eradication of infectious virus determined by CC-IFA.

Health Outcomes Explored At DDW 2009: Environmental Pollution Increases The Risk Of Liver Disease
A new study is the first to show that there is a previously unrecognized role for environmental pollution in liver disease in the general U.S. adult population. Frontal Cerebral Hypothermia Found To Be Possible New Treatment For Insomnia

Insomnia is associated with increased frontal cerebral metabolism during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Cerebral hypothermia, or cooling of the brain, has been found to reduce cerebral metabolism in other medical conditions, but its effects in insomnia are unknown. In a University of Pittsburgh study by Eric Nofzinger, M.D., professor of psychiatry, patients with insomnia who received a mild hypothermic stimulus to their scalps an hour before bedtime and during the first REM cycle of sleep showed reduced brain metabolism in the frontal cortex and reduced core body temperature. Three-quarters of the patients also reported other benefits such as less distracting thoughts before bedtime and an overall better and more refreshing sleep. Dr. Nofzinger notes that further clinical trials are necessary to determine the efficiency of this treatment for chronic insomnia. University of Pittsburgh
