Washington, D.C., Church Addresses HIV Stigma, Teaches Safe Sex To Black, Gay Congregation
The Washington Post on Sunday featured Washington D.C.,-based Inner Light Ministries, a 16-year-old black community church with about 100 members, where many go "to share their experience of being black and gay, living and loving in a city where HIV and AIDS lurk in epidemic proportions. ò€¦" Some members of the congregation, as well as four of its leaders including Bishop Rainey Cheeks are HIV-positive. Cheeks teaches safe sex as a part of his sermons and the church provides condoms to its members. The article also discusses the stigma associated with HIV among gay black men. "Some men are reluctant to reveal their health status to possible partners for fear of being rejected," according to the Post. "That attitude, Cheeks said, is part of why gay black men in the District are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. And why he has to keep preaching the message of safe sex," the article states (Fears, 7/26).

American Nurses Association And Texas Nurses Association Speak Out Against Wrongful Prosecution Of Winkler County Nurses
The American Nurses Association (ANA), which represents the interests of the nation"s 2.9 million registered nurses, is joining forces with the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) to strongly criticize the recent indictment and prosecution of two registered nurses in Winkler County, Texas, for reporting to the Texas Medical Board their concerns about a physician"s standard of practice at the Winkler County Memorial Hospital in Kermit, Texas. ANA and TNA are gravely concerned about the chilling effect the county"s actions could have on future nurse "whistle blowers" who advocate for their patients in the nation"s hospitals. An initial hearing on the nurses" motions to dismiss the case was held July 15 in the Winkler County Courthouse but no rulings were made on any of the motions.

Positive Preclinical Data On 2 Product Candidates At ENDO 09 Presented By Versartis

Versartis, Inc., an emerging company developing novel biologics with enhanced properties for patients with metabolic diseases, presented data for its long-acting product candidates, VRS-317 (hGH-rPEG) for treatment of growth hormone deficiency and for VRS-826 (IL-1ra-rPEG) for treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, at the Endocrine Society"s Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Versartis, through a unique licensing agreement with Amunix, Inc., uses the Amunix proprietary recombinant PEGylation (rPEG) technology to extend the half-life of established biologics. The preclinical Versartis compounds have the potential for significantly less frequent dosing and fewer side effects than those products currently on the market or in development. "New half-life extension data presented for the first time confirmed our expectation that dosing can be extended from weekly to monthly for our product candidates," said Jeffrey L. Cleland, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Versartis. "Our preclinical data show that VRS-317 demonstrated in vivo potency equal to daily hGH, and sustained plasma levels and pharmacodynamic responses in monkeys without toxicity. Potential benefits of VRS-317 include its stability at room temperature in a liquid formulation and the ability to dose monthly with a small gauge needle, thus increasing patient safety and convenience. VRS-317 may become "best in class" hGH therapy when our preclinical studies are confirmed in human clinical trials." "Treatment of auto-inflammation in diabetes with IL-1ra has been demonstrated to increase beta-cell responsiveness in human clinical trials," Dr. Cleland continued. "Our new approach with VRS-826 will provide a less frequently administered treatment that should have comparable safety to IL-1ra, which binds both IL-1b and IL-1a. The results from preclinical studies of VRS-317 and VRS-826 were presented in poster sessions."
