What Is Scurvy? What Causes Scurvy?
Scurvy is a condition where an individual has a vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency. The name scurvy comes from the Latin scorbutus, and humans have known about the disease since ancient Greek and Egyptian times. Scurvy commonly is associated with sailors in the 16th to 18th centuries who navigated long voyages without enough vitamin C and frequently perished from the condition. Modern cases of scurvy are very rare.

Surgeon General Nominee Backs Obama's Positions On Reproductive Health, White House Says
The Washington Post reports that Regina Benjamin -- President Obama"s nominee for U.S. surgeon general -- shares Obama"s position on reproductive health issues, a position that could put her "at odds" with the Catholic Church"s positions on reproductive rights, according to s familiar with her selection. White House spokesperson Reid Cherlin said, "Like [Obama], she believes that this is an issue where it is important to try and seek common ground and come together to try and reduce the number of unintended pregnancies." Cherlin added, "As a physician, she is deeply committed to the philosophy of putting her patients" needs first when it comes to providing care." The White House would not specifically comment on her views on abortion rights, and an HHS spokesperson says Benjamin is not permitted to speak publicly until she is confirmed. s close to Benjamin, who is Catholic, say that she does support abortion rights, the Post reports. However, several individuals who know Benjamin said her views would not affect her role as surgeon general. David Satcher -- a surgeon general in the Clinton administration who taught community health to Benjamin at the Morehouse School of Medicine -- said, "We all have our religions, but when you speak as the surgeon general to the American people, it"s not about your religion." He added, "I don"t see why the surgeon general has to get involved in a discussion about abortion." Jorge Alsip -- president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama -- said abortion-related issues occasionally arose when he and Benjamin served on the Alabama State Committee on Public Health. Alsip, who is Catholic, said he does not know her position on the issue, adding, "You kind of have to park your personal beliefs at the door when they conflict with what your role is."Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, said, "This is not pivotal to the surgeon general"s job." She added, "From the perspective of being a practicing Catholic, you can certainly say that it matters. I think being willing to work to reduce (abortion) is a good thing."Robert Lawrence, a director at Johns Hopkins University"s Bloomberg School of Public Health and chair of the board of Physicians for Human Rights, served with Benjamin on the group"s board from 1996 until 2002. He said, "I would think that as surgeon general she would uphold the law of the land, and the law of the land guarantees women a choice for reproductive health." He added, "The charge of the surgeon general is to be the people"s doctor and ensure that all those health services guaranteed under federal law are available to the people" (Thompson, Washington Post, 7/19).

Insurance Insiders Give Views On Health Reform
In an interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Washington state Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler called the American health system an out-dated, World War II-era obstacle to economic progress. "We"ve been talking about health-care reform in this country for over 100 years, and its never happened," he said. However, he added, "I believe that Congress will be successful." Kreidler, a Democrat, was a member of Congress in the 1990s, when the Clinton administration attempted an overhaul. This time around, he said, "We"re still in July, and they"re making huge progress" (Pulkkinen, 8/2).

Siemens Hearing Instruments Launches Education Initiative For Schools During Deaf Awareness Week

Siemens Hearing Instruments has kicked off its new education initiative during Deaf Awareness Week with a visit by its hearing ambassador Kellie Moody to a Birmingham based deaf school. The visit and the launch of an education focused website ties into this year"s Deaf Awareness theme of "look at me". Kellie, aged 25, has been deaf since birth, but has successfully followed her dream to become a model, winning a Miss Deaf UK title then appearing as a serious contender in BBC Three"s Britain"s Missing Top Model last year. She is now the face of Siemens Hearing Instruments and takes part in many initiatives to educate and inform audiences on overturning the stigma associated with hearing loss. Her recent visit to Braidwood School for the deaf in Birmingham was to talk to the children about how to achieve their aspirations despite having a disability. The new Siemens education initiative aims to open up dialogue on living with hearing loss and also raise awareness of the ear anatomy and importance of hearing protection in children who attend regular schools. With one in seven people in the UK affected by hearing loss, most children will know someone who has a hearing problem. Educating early can play an essential part in reduction the stigma around hearing health, plus raise awareness of the everyday situations that can impact on someone with hearing difficulties to form a more positive approach. "The new initiative provides a straightforward and succinct re for teachers to find out more about hearing health, which can then empower them to hold thought-provoking discussions with their pupils," comments Darren Ransley, Marketing Manager at Siemens Hearing Instruments. "Through having greater awareness of the situations that people with hearing difficulties face on a daily basis, we can enable better understanding and a more positive attitude towards social inclusion." The interactive website, http://www.siemens.co.uk/deafawarenessweek, has been designed to assist teachers in preparing lesson plans and assemblies around the topic of hearing health. It includes downloadable content relating to the topic of hearing loss, fun res to test hearing and diagrams to illustrate how the ear works. There is also video footage of Kellie discussing her story. The initiative has been pushed out nationwide. Siemens Hearing Instruments
